I have been in the hair business for over 30 years. During my 30 years of being a hairdresser, and 15 of being a salon owner, the beauty industry has gone through some major changes. Social media has allowed us to educate ourselves in ways we couldn’t do before. My first time in a salon in Boston, I knew there was magic in the air. Besides seeing beautiful hair, I loved the scent of hair products and the energy that surrounds you. I wanted this energy that I was being drawn to. I decided that is where I wanted to work. It’s funny to me because back in Israel, I was one of those clients that got their hair done every week and I loved being in the salon.
When I started my career, I had two small children (ages 4 and 5). I was learning the ropes and learning how to work with guests. I quickly made friends in the salon because we all liked to have fun and create beautiful hair. We didn’t care about making money, working only 40 hours, having days off, etc. We only cared about coming into the salon, meeting people, and cutting hair. It was such a fun time. It didn’t take long before I discovered that we also loved education and travel – we flew all over the country and the world to study with the best in the business.
The relationship that you build with your community of hair colleagues is just as important as the one you build with your guests and clients. It’s essential to keep your social intelligence growing because that’s what feeds your soul and your mind. Form as many relationships as you can within your organization, within your community. Go to conferences and travel to other countries. Get involved with charities that mean something to you. Study. Research. Learn. Keep your mind hungry for more….more is the opposite of less. Besides, who wouldn’t want to have relationships all over the globe?
Learn what motivates you and what inspires you. Find a companion that likes it too. Balance out those classes and conferences with travel and sightseeing.
